The event, written by both Fred Van Lente and Greg Pak, sees the self-described Chaos King Amatusu-Mikaboshi attempting to erase the universe from existence.
As well as playing a key role in the main series as a member of the so-called 'God Squad', which is formed to combat the Chaos King, Thor will also appear in his own solo adventure.
The two-issue limited series will see Thor face off with a new villain called Glory. It is described as a huge cosmic adventure but with many personal elements.
"He's no-one single god," writer J.M. DeMatteis told Comic Book Resources of the new villain he created for the series. "He's the embodiment of an entire pantheon."
DeMatteis is perhaps best known for writing the return of Kraven the Hunter in the recent 'Grim Hunt' arc in Amazing Spider-Man.
Chaos War: Thor will be published in November.
