Simonson is co-writing a new limited series with legendary Uncanny X-Men scribe Chris Claremont which sees a number of deceased X-Men members return to save the world from the Japanese god Amatsu-Mikaboshi.
Tying in with the company-wide event Chaos War, the two-issue series focuses on a team formed of resurrected characters Thunderbird, Banshee, Sophie and Esmee Cuckoo, as well as a few of Madrox's dupes.
Moira MacTaggert and Mystique's former lover Destiny will also return for Chaos War: X-Men.
Simonson explained to Comic Book Resources that she was happy to be able to give Thunderbird another chance, referring to the character's untimely death early on in the original X-Men series.
"Thunderbird himself is the key," Simonson teased.
Chaos War: X-Men begins in December.
