Gage will join current Astonishing X-Men writer Daniel Way on the series in May, at which point both will write separate but concurrent story arcs with entirely different teams of characters.
The former Thunderbolts writer chose a roster featuring the likes of Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Beast, Agent Brand, Storm and Lockheed, and admits that the team's varying dynamics were what drew him to the characters.
"I'm getting to write a lot of my favourites - Kitty, Lockheed, Colossus, Storm, Beast," Parker told Newsarama.
Parkers admitted that although he grew up enjoying traditional X-Men characters like Storm and Colossus, one of Marvel's newer characters, S.W.O.R.D Agent Abigail Brand, takes centre stage for his upcoming story arc.
"Agent Brand is really a lot of fun to write as well," Parker explained. 'She's like the grizzled military veteran, like Nick Fury, but she's a woman and half-alien, which kind of turns the clichés on their head."
As well as featuring a confrontation with alien Brood, Parker will also deal with the long awaited reunion between Kitty Pryde and her former pet dragon Lockheed, following Pryde's unexpected return from space last year.
The series begins its new direction in Astonishing X-Men #38 this May.
