Marvel has confirmed that a new hero will take on the mantle of Spider-Man this summer.

The comic company's editor-in-chief Axel Alonso has revealed that upon the conclusion of the current 'Death of Spider-Man' storyline running in both the Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and Ultimate Comics Avengers vs. Ultimates titles, Peter Parker will relinquish his mask to a new character, who will be suited with a brand new costume.

While not confirming who the new Spider-Man will be, or whether Peter Parker will be killed off, Alonso promised fans that the franchise will be forever altered by the storyline's climax.

"We called this story 'Death of Spider-Man' for a reason," Alonso said in an official statement. "This is a huge story that'll have fans around the world talking for a long time as we set the stage for the debut of our new Spider-Man."

The 'Death of Spider-Man' arc will come to an end in Ultimate Spider-Man #160, to be released in June.

Peter Parker made his first appearance as Spider-Man in the August 1962 edition of Amazing Fantasy.

The character has since gone on to become one of Marvel's signature superheroes, featuring in several spinoff TV series, novels and feature film adaptations, including the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield.
