Released this week, the 100-page issue features a short story by writer David S. Goyer and Miguel Sepulveda titled 'The Incident', in which Superman declares that he is renouncing his United States citizenship.
Kal El confronts the President's national security advisor with his decision following an incident in the Middle East, where his appearance at a governmental protest in Tehran is taken as an act of war by the US.
"I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of US policy," he says in the story. " 'Truth, justice and the American way' - it's just not enough anymore."
The alien immigrant, who was raised in Kansas and wears patriotic red and blue, has long been viewed as an iconic symbol of America in real life and within the DC Universe.
This is the latest change to the character following J. Michael Straczynski's controversial 'Grounded' storyline, which saw Superman walking across the US on foot to reconnect to its people.
Actions Comics #900 sees the return of Kal El to the pages of the title following Paul Cornell's Lex Luthor-starring arc. It features a host of artists and creators to mark the event.
