A memorial plaque honouring the creators of Superman has been stolen.

Hung in the Cleveland suburb of Glenville, the hometown of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the sign was removed a fortnight ago.

According to The Plain Dealer, the thieves used a hacksaw to remove the plaque, probably mistaking it for bronze because of its colour. The plaque is actually made of aluminium.

The sign was placed nearby the house where Siegel lived until 1950, the place where he and his friend conceived the now-legendary hero.

It was erected in 2003 to mark the 65th anniversary of the release of Action Comics #1, which featured the first appearance of the Man of Steel.

Action Comics #1 holds the record for the most expensive comic ever sold. Nicolas Cage was recently reunited with his own copy of the comic, which was stolen from his home in 2000.
