The book, titled Bloodspell, will be written by Paul Dini (Zatanna, Gotham City Sirens) and illustrated by Joe Quinones ('Green Lantern' in Wednesday Comics).
Quinones announced the OGN at Boston Comic Con, where the artist previewed some pages from the book.
"The book begins with a back story where an 11-year-old Zatanna meets a 16-year-old Dinah Lance," said DC Women Kicking Ass. "And the two don't get off to a good start on [a] trip to Mount Everest."
The project was first announced in 2006, with the artistic team of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti attached. In 2007, it was reported that production would start on the book soon under an unnamed artist.
Dini is best known for his work on animated series including Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond for DC. He has recently been working on Batman: Arkham City, a miniseries tying into the video game, the first issue of which debuted this week.
Bloodspell is expected to be released in 2012.
