The trio left Earth on a mission into space during Ed Brubaker's Uncanny X-Men run back in 2006, but have yet to return after featuring in a number of cosmic events.
Carey claimed that the time is now right for them to return to the X-Men, and is penning a four-issue story arc called 'Five Miles South of the Universe' that will reunite them with the rest of the team.
"The last we heard, Rachel, Havok and Polaris were on their way home," Carey explained to Newsarama. "That was some time ago and they haven't been seen. So where are they?"
The writer said that he is enjoying being able to bring the popular characters back into current X-Men continuity, and hinted that some of them may feature in X-Men Legacy more regularly.
"It won't be a clean in-and-out," Carey admitted. "Some of those characters will stay with us for a while."
The story arc will be preceded by a back-up feature in X-Men Legacy #250, in which Rachel Summers reaches out to Rogue telepathically for help.
Following the conclusion of Age of X, the series is becoming a team book for the first time since its relaunch as X-Men: Legacy back in 2008, and will feature a core cast of Rogue, Professor X, Gambit, Magneto, Frenzy, and Legion.
'Five Miles South of the Universe' begins in X-Men Legacy #254 this August.
