Marvel Comics announced earlier this year that Tobin's series would end next month with Spider-Girl #8. The title has had disappointing sales despite a positive critical reception.
"I do think we were building a core audience that was warming to the title, but numbers are numbers," Tobin told Newsarama, when asked about the cancellation.
"[The series is ending] maybe not at the pace I wanted to do, and maybe not with a couple of subplots that I would have found interesting to explore, but as far as the main body of what we all wanted to tell I think it's in there," Tobin explained. "A couple surprises left in store, even."
Following the end of Spider-Girl, lead character Anya Corazon will be featured in a three-issue miniseries tying in with the upcoming Spider-Island event.
Tobin said that although the miniseries will see Anya regain some of her powers due to the nature of the storyline, fans may be surprised with where Spider-Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl leaves the character.
"Anya will be rather on the precipice during this project, and we'll have to see how events play out before we can talk about what side of the knife edge she jumps off," Tobin added.
Spider-Girl #8 is due out on June 22.
