The Mighty Thor writer spoke about the death of Bucky Barnes during the 'Fear Itself' panel at North Carolina's Heroescon, reports Comic Book Resources.
"When all of this ends, you have to have the Red Skull kill Bucky," he said. "That's how it has to end, and people would look at me like I was dumb."
Fraction said that he sought permission from Ed Brubaker - the writer who had been responsible for the return of Bucky and his transformation into the new Captain America.
At a later Marvel retreat, Brubaker asked whether issue #3 would see the death of the character. "I went, 'Yes!' No take-backs," he added.
"You could see he regretted it as soon as he said it, but sometimes you know when the story is right. He gave me the end to his Bucky piece to do in Fear Itself."
Fear Itself #3 was released on June 1. Marvel has teased the fallout of the death in Fear Itself #4, which will be released on July 6.
