Following the conclusion of Marvel's summer event, Schism, Uncanny X-Men will end and be relaunched alongside a brand new series called Wolverine and the X-Men.
Gillen will continue to write the new Uncanny X-Men, which is expected to follow Cyclops as he leads a new team of mutants to become international superheroes.
"When I inherited the book I've been resolving unfinished business and developing stuff to where I wanted it for the relaunch," Gillen explained to Newsarama. "It's a new status quo which I've manufactured to my own design."
While the writer refused to divulge which characters would comprise his new team, he did hint that most of the members were powerhouses in their own right.
"Generally speaking, what kinds of mutants are on my team? Extremely powerful ones," Gillen teased. "I'd argue that the core cast of nine are the most powerful X-team of all time."
Gillen suggested that fans will be surprised by the eventual team lineups for both titles, and promised that each side includes some unlikely choices.
"When the team lists are made public there will certainly be some which will make people wonder why they've gone the way they did," he added.
X-Men: Regenesis begins in October with Wolverine and the X-Men #1, followed by Uncanny X-Men #1 in November.
