Launching later this year, IDW has joined up with CBS Consumer products as well as Star Trek producer and screenwriter Roberto Orci to create a new ongoing series.
"Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money," Orci announced. "But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been."
Star Trek will explore the implications of the alternate timeline established in Abrams' reboot, as well as reinterpreting classic Star Trek tales.
Orci will serve as creative director of the series alongside regular Star Trek writer Mike Johnson and artist Stephen Molnar.
The title's first issue will feature a reimagining of the episode 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' from Star Trek: The Original Series.
IDW previously published a miniseries in 2010 which retold the events of Abrams' Star Trek.
Simon Pegg, who portrayed Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott in the 2009 reboot, recently confirmed that filming for the sequel is scheduled to begin later this year.
Star Trek #1 begins in September.
