The Green Lantern Corps writer revealed that he doesn't plan to implement any drastic changes when the new series launches, apart from streamlining Reyes's somewhat complicated origin story.
The new Blue Beetle ongoing series forms part of DC's 'Next Generation of Justice' line of titles, which will launch with the company-wide reboot this September in the wake of Flashpoint.
"Jamie is unique in the DC lineup of heroes. There's nobody else quite like him," Bedard told Newsarama. "In a way, you can describe him as Spider-Man meets Green Lantern.
"I mean, he's the kinda nerdy high-school kid with a wicked sense of humour and a penchant for getting into trouble who receives the ultimate cosmic weapon."
Bedard will explore the origin of Blue Beetle's scarab armour early on in the title, as well as revealing more about the alien race who created it.
"That doesn't mean we'll lose the humour and fun that made the first series such a joy to read, but being the Blue Beetle shouldn't be a cakewalk either," Bedard added.
Blue Beetle #1 will be published this September.
