Northlanders writer Brian Wood is working on the DC Comics digital companion with Judge Dredd artist Simon Coleby, reports IGN.
Wood's prequel fleshes out the events of the action RPG, which is set in the north of Middle Earth during the original novels. It expands on the stories of characters only mentioned in passing in the original books.
The comic is the first attempt to adapt JRR Tolkien's legendary property into the medium for some time.
It is currently reported that parts one and two of the comic will only be available for download by gamers who pre-order War in the North from Toys R Us. Amazon is only offering part two.
The title is thought to be one of the licensed properties Wood has been working on that he recently teased on his blog.
Further release details for Wood's Lord of the Rings: War in the North digital comics are yet to be announced.
