As part of Marvel's 'Big Shots' initiative, Greg Rucka and artist Marco Checchetto will launch a new ongoing title starring the vigilante Frank Castle, with Rucka promising that fans will be pleased by the return to form.
"[The premise is] not just the Punisher, but the Punisher in the Marvel Universe," Rucka explained, according to Comic Book Resources. "That's not an idea that comes easily, and I had to think of a way to make it work before I accepted."
The series will see Frank Castle return to his roots after several controversial changes over the past few years, most notably his temporary transformation into a Frankentein-type monster as part of the rebranded Franken-Castle series.
While Rucka freely admits that the idea of the Punisher had never appealed to him in the past, he has since become a big fan of the character.
"He has the image of a bull in a china shop, but he's anything but," Rucka explained. "I love how smart he is."
Punisher will primarily see Frank Castle taking on street-level criminals and mobsters, with only occasional appearances from superheroes and supervillains.
"The other problem with Frank in the Marvel Universe is that Frank kills people, and the Marvel Universe is full of heroes who have a problem with that," Rucka teased. "This, then, will require Frank to at least attempt to keep a low profile."
Punisher #1 is due out on August 3, followed closely by Punisher #2 on August 29.
