Writer Greg Pak and artist Mike McKone will take over the ongoing series from issue #44.
The teaser image released with the announcement shows current and former X-Men leaders Cyclops and Storm sharing a passionate kiss.
The comic - released in November - will see Ororo Munroe seeking out Scott Summers for help that only he can offer.
"After Xavier, the X-Men's two greatest leaders are Scott and Ororo," Pak told Marvel.com. "They've borne responsibilities few others can conceive.
"And just those experiences alone should provide them [with] reasons to bond. But maybe they've just never had a moment to consider it; each has always seemed to be wrapped up in a wild romance with someone else."
Pak continued: "So yes, what the heck is going on? I'll just say that everything that's happening is utterly inconceivable, but completely real, completely in character, and completely in continuity."
Storm is currently married to the Black Panther and Cyclops is involved in a relationship with fellow X-Man Emma Frost.
Pak said that his run would tie into the events unfolding from the current X-Men: Schism event series.
He has written two X-Men: Phoenix miniseries and Magneto: Testament. McKone co-created the X-Men spinoff Exiles.
Astonishing X-Men has previously been written by acclaimed writers including Joss Whedon and Warren Ellis.
Marvel released the first teasers this week relating to its new Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine and the X-Men titles.
