'Batman: Year One' director outlines changes to source material

Batman: Year One co-director Sam Liu has discussed some of the alterations he has made to the feature's source material.

The helmer told Animation Magazine that he has updated some of the fight sequences to appeal to a modern audience.

"People want to see more combo movies," he said. "They want to see almost like a ballet kind of choreographed fight and I just think that stuff that passed in the 1990s doesn't really fly anymore."

Liu, who is directing Year One with Lauren Montgomery, went on to say that the animated film has more of an "anime" feel than Frank Miller's 1987 comic books.

"Batman: Year One was animated by MOI Animation in Korea, which gave the story more of an anime style than the original comic book had," he explained.

Year One's voice cast includes Ben McKenzie as Batman, Katee Sackhoff as Detective Sarah Essen and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston as Lieutenant James Gordon.

A Catwoman-starring back-up feature will be included with the straight-to-DVD release. The feline anti-hero will be voiced by Eliza Dushku in both the main feature and the back-up short.

Batman: Year One is due for release in the US on October 18.
