The actor will continue to play Peter Parker in the Broadway show through May 2012, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Carney said: "I can't imagine a more wonderful, harder-working company than my mates on Broadway, and I look forward to being with them until shooting begins, and again as soon as we've wrapped."
Rock singer Carney joined the production in November 2009. He was originally contracted until November this year before signing the extension.
Turn Off the Dark endured a troubled production schedule, hampered by on-set injuries, poor reviews and budgetary problems. Director Julie Taymor was replaced by Philip William McKinley in March, and the show was completely reworked.
The latest incarnation of the musical has proven to be a commercial success.
