The new title reintroduced archaeologist Carter Hall to the DC Universe as part of the publisher's 'New 52' relaunch, and surprised fans by giving Hawkman a new and seemingly organic armour.
"We thought it would really help the visuals of the book while adding to the character," Tan told Newsarama. "We really wanted to show the process of him changing.
"As people have seen, the armour is more organic. It's alive. It's building on the character like a canvas.
"And this armour manifests whatever weapon he needs or armour for whatever part of the body needs to be shielded."
Tan added: "This will all be important as you keep reading the book."
The artist revealed that Hall's mysterious past will be slowly explored as The Savage Hawkman continues, but refused to confirm whether Hawkgirl will make an appearance in the title at some point down the line.
The Savage Hawkman #3 will be published on November 23.
