'X-Men' death of Phoenix page fetches $65k

A page from Uncanny X-Men's 'Dark Phoenix Saga' has sold at auction for $65,000 (£41,000).

John Byrne and Terry Austin's iconic page features the tearful farewell Jean Grey gives to Cyclops on the moon before her imminent death.

The original artwork was among the pieces in a recent sale by Heritage Auctions, reports ICv2.

1980s comics art has been fetching high prices at auction lately, with a page from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns #3 selling for $448,125 (£284,600) in September.

Chris Claremont's legendary 'Dark Phoenix Saga' saw founding X-Men member Grey possessed by a powerful cosmic entity which slowly corrupted her and resulted in her sacrificial death.

A recently-recovered copy of Action Comics #1 is expected to sell at auction for over the $1.5 million (£950,000) record.
