Marvel Comics announced that the Generation Hope scribe will share writing duties with Ed Brubaker on the title's next arc.
"We're actually telling the story of one of the other people who has been Bucky, and the way he gets pulled back into the cycle of life-threatening superhero adventure," Asmus told Newsarama.
"The vast majority of our story takes place now, in the present-day Marvel Universe, with some flashbacks to the World War II era that might make for a smoother transition."
Captain America & Bucky launched in July, taking up the numbering of Marvel's flagship Captain America title. Black Panther: Man Without Fear artist Francesco Francavilla also joins the creative team this month.
Asmus's run commences with Captain America & Bucky #625, scheduled for release on December 28.
