'Before Watchmen': Is the prequel a good idea? - poll

After endless speculation, DC Comics today confirmed the inevitable with plans for seven prequel mini-series to the classic Watchmen.

The likes of Brian Azzarello and J Michael Straczynski are on board to pen background titles based around Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan and the rest, but what do you make of the whole thing?

Alan Moore is of course not involved, and while original co-creator Dave Gibbons gave his official blessing, his pointed comment that "the original series of Watchmen is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell" is the one that jumps out of the press release.

Will the new series undermine Moore and Gibbons's self-contained universe? Or does the presence of original editor Len Wein and colourist John Higgins mean that the project will be a success?

The first comment from a Digital Spy reader on the news came from Franke Lier, who said: "I hate it already, but dammit, I know I'm going to buy every last one of them!"

We can see that emotion being shared by many, and we don't think DC will care if punters' money is being handed over grudgingly, as long as it's being shelled out.

Whatever the new stories are like, the original books will last forever. Zack Snyder's Watchmen got a mixed response from the critics, but it undoubtedly introduced a whole new world of fans to the comics. Can these new books do the same?
