Thor debut sells for $222,200 in auction

Thor's debut in Journey Into Mystery #83 has raised $222,200 (£140,715) in an auction.
A CGC 9.4 grade copy of the comic, which introduced the thunder god in a strip titled 'The Stone Men From Saturn', was sold by Pedigree Comics this week.
Journey Into Mystery #83 was first released in 1962. Thor, created by Jack Kirby, Joe Sinnott, Stan Lee, and Larry Lieber, appeared in subsequent issues of the comic and went on to become its star. It was renamed Thor in 1966.
Two other CGC 9.4 grade copies of the title are known to be in circulation, as is a higher grade CGC 9.6 issue. Pedigree Comics sold a CGC 9.2 copy for $100,000 (£63,328) in October last year.
"The book is characterised by unbelievable colour strike, perfect centring, tight staples, razor sharp corners and phenomenal white pages," said Doug Schmell of Pedigree Comics. "It is easily the second nicest existing copy and it comes from the best known run of Journey Into Mystery.
"Founded in 2002, this unbelievable run of Journey Into Mystery (28 books in total) contains many of the highest graded examples of each issue, most of which are in certified 9.4 and higher."
Last year, Spider-Man's debut title Amazing Fantasy #15 broke the record amount paid for a Silver Age comic when it sold for $1.1 million (£670,000).
