A host of comic creators have offered their support to Friedrich, who has been hit by a counterclaim for $17,000 (£10,700) following an unsuccessful lawsuit against Marvel Comics.
The writer had sought to reclaim the rights to the Johnny Blaze character.
Creators including Gail Simone, Jill Thompson, Mark Waid, Steve Lieber, David Gallaher and Neil Gaiman have all pledged their support.
"Gary needs money now," wrote 30 Days of Night creator Niles on Twitter. "Because of the ruling he is unable to attend comic cons and make his bills."
Niles offered to set up a PayPal account for Friedrich to receive donations.
Waid said that there are two sides to every tale, but still urged people to donate.
Niles has set up a page for donations to Friedrich on his website.
