Garfield has been given an ongoing comic series by BOOM! Studios.
Mark Evanier is to write the title under the publisher's KABOOM! imprint, with artwork provided by Gary Barker.
"Garfield embodies qualities that we all see in so many people around us - and too often in ourselves. He's lazy. He overeats. He's enormously self-obsessed, Evanier told CBR. "Everyone either identifies with him or with all the other folks in his world who have to put up with him."

Evanier is no stranger to Garfield, having written the first cartoon series and served as producer on the current one. He was hand-picked for the comic by the property's creator Jim Davis.
"Along with being a fine cartoonist, Jim's a good manager of his awesome little empire," Evanier added. "He knows when to leave people alone and when to intervene. I've worked for a lot of people who couldn't tell the difference."
BOOM! Studios previously launched an on-going monthly series based on Charles Schulz's Peanuts.
Garfield #1 arrives in stores in May.
