The comics - which include 44 of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide's list of top 100 issues from the Golden Age of Comics - will be auctioned in New York today (February 22) and are expected to fetch over $2 million (£1.3 million), reports The AP.
Michael Rorrer of Oxnard, California, had been told by great-aunt Ruby Wright that she would leave her late husband Billy's comics to him in his will, but had never hinted at their rarity.
The 31-year-old did not realise the worth of the collection of 345 comics stored in her Martinsville, Vancouver, basement until he discovered that it included a copy of Superman's debut in Action Comics #1 following a conversation with a colleague.
"This is just one of those collections that all the guys in the business think don't exist anymore," said Lon Allen, managing director of comics for Dallas's Heritage Auctions, the auction house overseeing the sale.
Billy Wright had kept the comics in good condition after buying them when he was a child.
