The Wolverine & the X-Men: Alpha & Omega writer was revealed to be tackling Marvel Comics' mainstream title and the alternate-reality Ultimate version of the mutant team at WonderCon 2012.
"When I started working with Marvel again last year, I was open to whatever but really wanted to write the mutants again; I really feel that's my home," Wood told Comic Book Resources.
"Generation X was a lifetime ago, or feels like it, and it was my first-ever professional writing job and I think it influenced me more than I realise. It was 1999 or 2000, as I recall. I'm really excited to be back."
Wood revealed that his Ultimate X-Men run - in which he will replace Nick Spencer - will focus on Kitty Pryde.
Replacing Victor Gischler on X-Men, Wood said that he will recast the group as a "security team" which will take "the mutant/human conflict out to its bleeding edge, all over the world".
Wood's runs will begin in X-Men #30 and Ultimate Comics X-Men #13, which will both debut in June.
