Katsuhiro Otomo has unveiled the plans for his first long-form manga in over 20 years, reports Anime News Network.
He revealed in an interview in art magazine Geijutsu Shincho that he is working on a series for "a certain shōnen magazine".
The issue also included DJ Teck no Morning Attack, an eight-page story and the first drawn by Otomo since 2006.
Since the conclusion of Akira in 1990, Otomo has been directing films - including an animated big-screen adaptation of Akira - and producing the occasional short manga story.
Warner Bros recently put on hold its planned Akira live-action movie.
Jaume Collet-Serra was attached to direct, with Garrett Hedlund starring and actors including Ken Watanabe, Helena Bonham Carter and Kristen Stewart in talks to join the cast.
The project has however been shelved by Warner Bros due to budgetary issues, despite speculation that Collet-Serra had managed to reduce the budget by around half.
