National Comics is to be revived as an anthology title from DC Comics.

The series will explore the publisher's 'New 52' universe, shining the spotlight on lesser-known characters including Rose and Thorn, Looker and Madame X, Wired reports.

Jeff Lemire will team up with artist Cully Hamner for a standalone story focusing on Eternity, a police officer with the power to resurrect the dead. Creative teams for the other strips are expected to be announced soon.

DC Comics operated under the name National Comics for a spell during the Golden Age, before adopting the moniker of its Batman-centric title. An anthology titled National Comics ran in the 1940s, featuring characters that would eventually be integrated into the DC universe.

DC relaunched its entire line at the end of August last year as part of its 'New 52' initiative. The move helped the firm dominate the sales charts for the latter months of 2011, but it has since fallen behind rival Marvel Comics in terms of dollar and unit share.

National Comics will debut in July.
