Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld's co-creator has criticised DC Comics' impending relaunch, claiming that the new character bears little resemblance to his creation.

Writer Dan Mishkin has shared his misgivings about the forthcoming Sword of Sorcery title, which will feature a revamped version of his fan favourite character.

"It doesn't feel great," he told Comic Book Resources. "It doesn't feel great to see our characters handled in ways that don't seem true to what we were intending to do.

"I also think what they're setting out to do isn't worth doing. My understanding is this is going to be a 17-year-old Amy Winston who discovers that she's Amethyst and that she's had a pretty rough life in those 17 years.

"You can do that, and because of the rules of the game you can even call it Amethyst. But to say that it's essentially the same as what we did - I'm sorry, I just don't think that's true, because essentially what we did was a story about being on the cusp of adolescence and discovering what the moral choices of adulthood are going to be.

"You don't do that at 17 - you do that at 12 or 13."

Mishkin did, however, praise the new creative team of Christy Marx and Aaron Lopresti, saying that he believes that "they are going to be successful".

He also revealed that under his contract he and co-creators Gary Cohn and Ernie Colón will receive a 20% share of the profits from the title.

Sword of Sorcery will launch with September's issue #0.
