Current writer Len Wein is stepping down to focus on the prequel's epilogue issue and his ongoing work on the Ozymandias miniseries, reports The Source.

The secondary feature appears in the back of every issue in the prequel project, telling a tale of damnation on the high seas similar to the 'Tales of the Black Freighter' story that appeared in the pages of the original Watchmen limited series.

Higgins was formerly a frequent collaborator with Alan Moore, and coloured Watchmen alongside artist Dave Gibbons.

Wein - who served as editor on the classic series - recently described Moore as "selfish" for his resistance to the Before Watchmen project.

Higgins will take over full duties on The Curse of the Crimson Corsair in Before Watchmen: Dr Manhattan #1, which will debut on August 22.
