"It's set before issue 1 which is really terrifying, I'm loving it but it's really terrifying," Gaiman said.

"This is the story of having to fight this very, very peculiar war in a distant galaxy far, far away where dreams are starting to melt down. The incarnation of Dream of that part of the galaxy has basically been destroyed and he's having to fill in."

Illustrated by JH Williams III, the six-issue Sandman prequel was announced at Comic Con International 2012 over the summer. Gaiman last returned to the world of Dream and his family the Endless in 2003's The Sandman: Endless Nights.

His fan-favourite DC Comics character Death was last seen in 2010 during Paul Cornell's Lex Luthor-centric run on Action Comics.

The new Sandman series will debut in 2013.
