The Unwritten cover artist Yuko Shimizu has been awarded with the prestigious gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators.

Shimizu was handed the silver for her artwork on Unwritten #43, and took the gold for an advertisement for a women's hair removal service that she illustrated, reports Comics Alliance.

The society, which has supported the art world since the early 20th century, created closer ties with the comic book industry earlier this year following its acquisition of the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art's collection and MoCCA Fest.

The Unwritten, created by Mike Carey and Peter Gross, is an urban fantasy series published under DC Comics's Vertigo imprint, set in a world where fiction and reality cross over.

American Illustration recently selected six of Shimizu's works for its 31st edition, including an Unwritten cover, a piece of artwork she produced for Playboy and a drawing from the upcoming children's book Barbed Wire Baseball.

Shimizu has illustrated 46 covers for The Unwritten to date.
