'Spawn' tackles real-world politics

By
Spawn is to tackle real-world comics in next week's issue, depicting Barack Obama's recent presidential election victory.

Issue #225 of the Image Comics series sees villain Jason Wynn reveal that he helped influence the course of the 2012 election as part of a grand scheme.

"The book's been around for a long time, 20 years now, and there's always been that sort of corrupt government piece of the puzzle, if you will," series creator Todd McFarlane told CBR.

"Jason Wynn - the government op who offed the original Spawn, Al Simmons - and Al Simmons worked for the government. Now you have a huge government election and we've said off and on that there's huge government corruption among the whole rank and file.

"We just thought, 'We've never done anything that's tied to tie into real time'."

The issue was originally intended to launch a day after the election with two Watchmen-inspired covers being prepared - one bearing the caption 'Obama wins' and the other 'Romney wins'.

McFarlane went on to say that the issue's content would have differed slightly had Mitt Romney won the election to incorporate some of the Republican Party's agendas.

Spawn #225 arrives in stores on December 6.
