Eric Powell is "cautiously optimistic" about the future of a Goon film.

The cartoonist has discussed the process of finding funding for a David Fincher-helmed project.

Speaking to The Tennessean, he addressed the challenges of selling an adult animated film to the studios, especially one with no previous films it can be compared to.

"They can't say, 'Oh, this is like Toy Story 2'," he said.

"It's animated work that's not geared toward little kids. I don't know. I think they're a little scared."

Those behind the potential film recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a test reel they can use to sell the movie to potential backers.

"I'd love to break out and make the characters a little more well-known," Powell said. "We have more bullets in our gun now.

"I'm cautiously optimistic. I just have to believe that it's gonna happen."
