"It has been really hard keeping quiet about it," Mary told The Guardian. "We were astonished.

"Just being shortlisted was amazing and hearing we'd won the category was stunning. We're delighted of course, both personally - it's the first story I've had published - but also for the medium, I can't believe a graphic novel has won."

The book interweaves the tale of James Joyce's daughter Lucia with Mary Talbot's own troubled relationship with her father, Joycean scholar James S Atherton.

The author's husband Bryan Talbot - who illustrated the book - is an industry veteran known for his work on 2000 AD, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, The Sandman and, more recently, the acclaimed Grandville series.

Newly-appointed Man Booker Prize chairman Robert Macfarlane recently said that he would welcome graphic novel submissions for the awards.
