Don't Miss: Cardiff Film & Comic Con, Alternative Manga talk

The coming week will see a talk on alternative manga and the Cardiff Film and Comic Con.

Dr Ryan Holmberg will present Garo and the Birth of Alternative Manga at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London on Wednesday, February 26 from 5 to 7pm.

He will discuss the magazine Garo from its founding in 1964 to its closure in 2002.

"This talk will survey the early years of the magazine, looking at its roots in the rental library 'kashihon' culture of the previous decade, its relationship to contemporary political issues ranging from school curricula debates to the Vietnam War, and finally its embrace of a new generation of artists influenced by Pop Art, New Wave cinema, and the visual culture of the Japanese Empire," said SOAS.

The Cardiff Film and Comic Con will be held at the Motorpoint Arena over the weekend of March 1-2.

Comics guests including David Lloyd, Alberto Ponticelli, John Wagner, Chris Geary and Mike Collins. Bernard Cribbins, Dave Prowse, Hannah Spearritt, Lee Meriwether, John Rhys Davies and Hattie Hayridge will also be in attendance.
