...What, no mention of the equally subtexty relationship between the girls? They seemed to have shacked up by the finale! ;)

Merlin Series 1 was excellent. Ben Rawson-Jones( the writer of this article) got it so wrong unfortunately. The makers of Merlin got everything right so far and the above article do not represent the reality but only Ben's thoughts. Its too harsh and getting into details absolutely pointless. There is no homosexuality between Arthur and Merlin ( if that is 'politely' he is trying to say)but only promotes the power of true friendship, love and loyalty. Criticisms? hmmmmmmm.... so far only him gave such a harsh one. Nobody is perfect you , never forget that :)

I think that says it all. And this: "I certainly hope they keep up the Unresolved Sexual Tension between (colin and bradley) Merlin and Arthur for several seasons yet - and any brief unsuccessful romantic encounters can be nicely contrasted to their epic love/ common fate thing... :P The average member of the audience can pretend it's male bonding when they look soulfully into each others eyes and repeatedly face death for each other, while the rest of us can enjoy the fantastic slashiness :)" It's what caught my eye from the beginning. I love the show either way though.

Don't listen to people who want more morgana or less morgana or het romance or dragon or whatever. Don't be all Arthurian Smallville. Please! Above all: You really don't need a "Lana Lang".

I love this show. Although I'm not fond of Katie and Angel's acting, the Arthur/Merlin chemistry saves it. I've bought volume one and can't wait for series 2.

i agree with all comments except i think morgana is a terrible actress and spoilt the programme for me. less on screen time not more please.

i dont get it. why Gwen and Arthur should be together? hope it will not happen. simply there is no chemistry between James Bradley and Angel.

Must admit a gay twist in this series would be a GREAT twist!

i really really hope that Merlin and Arthur will get together in series 2. P.S. already bought Merlin volume 1 and LOVED IT!

Merlin is hot. Arthur is hot. Morgana is hot. Gwen is hot. Show is hot. :))))

Love the show. ha... i think it it could be nice and fun to have Merlin and Arthur together as a couple. but unfortunately it will not gonna happen... still im enjoying a lot their friendship
Chowned on December 30th, 2008
Must admit a gay twist would put me off the series as well. But I\'d prefer it over the Merlin writers playing green about the Arthur/Merlin relationship, then making a reveal at the 11th hour, in the show\'s last episode or some such. The heavy hinting without outright committing strikes me as the writers wanting to have their cake and eating it too. I\'m not a fan.
Ludmilla on December 30th, 2008
I hope they don't go with the gay relationship thing either. Bloke who plays Merlin is fugly. Not saying that all queer people have to be attractive, but imagining them Arthur and Merlin rolling around in bed together - not hot.
Tatiana Cardiff on December 28th, 2008
Only managed to see a couple of the episodes but the guy who plays merlin seems to be doing very well seen him performing in London. Wasn't keen on the female actors hop thy get better or the next series!
Naomi on December 28th, 2008
Mainly agree with the review. The plots were all reletivly similar at first. I hope that they don't go with the gay relationship thing - it would ruin the "intense friendship" theme and ruin chances of Arthur/Gwen or Arthur/Morgana.
J Peterson - Portsmouth. on December 27th, 2008
This new take on the Authrian Legend is really fun and refreshing. The relationship between Arthur and Merlin adds so much excitment and interest to the plot, and feels so much more relevent than dishing out the same old Arthur/Guinevere (Gwen) -but could actually explain it. As Gwen's eye was on Launcelot wasn't it? Tony Head as Uther brings his own acting brilliance, as does Richard Wilson as Gaius. Morgana and Nimueh are wonderfully wicked beautiful characters too. Yes for more of them, and yes yes yes for more Arthur/ Merlin. This is the sort of British quirky plot that creates something special.

Merlin - Season 1 has been the best ever and I have always rated each episode 5 out of 5 because it is such a good show and it is good news for the fan it is returning next year again so more cool adventures for Merlin.

After the trailers I started watching the show, then missed a couple of the mid-season episodes...then lost the will to continue watching it. It just wasn't worth catching up on, which made it not worth watching it to begin. Which makes me wonder....why is it worth leaving a comment about? hmmm....
Ludmilla on December 24th, 2008
Are they seriously going to make Arthur and Merlin gay in the new series, like Jack and Ianto in Torchwood?
Sarah, Reading on December 23rd, 2008
Really enjoy it, looking forward to the second series :0)

Merlin seems to be the anti-lord of the Rings. I wasn't happy with the colour blind casting or gereneral lack of attractive women. You can't have PC seductresses wearing outfits that were as unsexy as possible and thats what Merlin tried to deliver and failed.
Katy on December 22nd, 2008
I Love MERLIN! I REALLY DO! I BECAME ADDICTIVE TO IT! and i mostly agree with this review. personally would like to praise Colin Morgan(Merlin) and Bradley James(Arthur) perfomance. They are amazing. Especially together. such a fun to watch them. BBC producers you are genius! i really feel incredible chemistry between them. and my favorite episodes was 4th (Poisoned Chalise) and 11th (Labirinth..) . Gwen in my opinion is cute and nice, but to be honest i cant see her as a future queen. I think Morgana is much better.
Gary St Helier, Jersey. on December 21st, 2008
Fantastic show, on the same level as Doctor Who and Tourchwood. can't wait for season two!
Liz, Watford on December 21st, 2008
I think Nimue had to go to make room for Morgana if she turns to the dark side: a dark Morgana and Nimue would be too similar.

Unfortunately I gave up some way into the series for reasons outlined in the early part of the review. I might give it another go if I can catch the last few episodes.

The sword in the stone was never Excalibur, that's the one from the "moistened bint" in the Lake.....
Kate L'pool on December 21st, 2008
Agree with the review started off pretty bad but got a lot better. Hope they ditch Gwen and bring a proper Guinevere in and give Morgana more to do she was completely underused.

Nice to see Richard Wilson getting his teeth into something else. A fine actor who should not just be remembered for one role. Can't fault the general analysis by Ben. Given the plot so far and taking the original story into account, I could see that the dragon may no longer see Arthur coming to the throne as a way of being released. Sort of inidcates he might team up with Morgana to bring down Camelot. Perhaps the fall of Camelot will be what the next series is about and Arthur's attempts to regain the kingdom. Enter Merlin to stick Excalibur into a stone and convince the populiation that only the true king can remove it. ... Well, lots of scope. But I did think the Dragon served little purpose.

I thought it was a far better show than it looked prior to it starting. Good performances from all the cast (especially Richard Wilson whom I usually HATE in anything as I can't see past Victor Meldrew), and can't argue with the points raised in the review. We simply MUST see more of Morgana next year - a cracking little actress, easy on the ear as much as she's easy on the eye and someone who should go far. All in all, something I'll be pleased to see return next year. Now, where's the new Robin Hood series?

Excellent review - spot on! I almost gave up on this series after watching half of the first episode then decided to give it another go on iPlayer. I can't say that I feel the show is a good substitute for Doctor Who just yet (although, to be fair, it was at a real disadvantage coming after the best season of DW so far) but, with the adjustments you suggest (particularly more Morgana), there's no reason why it shouldn't become one.

This drama has made me believe family drama again! I like it best when the characters are developed more. Loved evil Uther, Merlin and Arthur, even Gauis grew on me. Morgana is great and showed a evil side very well but very under used. Gwen was a boring character to pretty much throughout, she needs more to do. This was a great effort for the first series, considering the risk of making 13 eps for the BBC. I will be getting the DVD, so I must love it. Roll on series 2, do hope it evolves as time goes on.
Annie, London on December 21st, 2008
The series certainly took it's time, building up, and the fact that the first few episodes were thematically very similar defiantly did not help that. Also, the two stand out episodes, for me, Moment of Truth and Labyrinth of Geldof, were the two that so stood apart from the formula, and also the two that fetured all four young actors together the most, and you have to give credit to Angel Coulby, Gwen was pretty good in both those episodes. The finale was fine, up until it ended, slightly too abruptly, it could almost have done with more reconciliation, especially after Merlin, pretty much murdered Nimueh (although, what is the betting she's not dead?) Shame Merlin won't be back until late next year, at the earliest. :(

"Colin Morgan and Bradley Walsh gelled fantastically well together" I don't remember Bradley Walsh in it thankfully, the two pints guy was bad enough!
