On the plus side, John Simm is a joy to watch and his death scene is both wonderfully scripted, directed and acted, with David Tennant once again able to give the show an emotional edge that makes viewers reach out for their hankies. The fact that Russell T Davies has structured the narrative in a way that enables us to feel such pity for the malevolent Master's plight is testament to his skills as a writer. In addition, the journey of Martha Jones from medical student to world saviour is certainly satisfying and Freema Agyeman deserves much credit for her engaging portrayal.
Enthralling revelations come thick and fast in the last minutes of the episode, with Martha leaving, the Titanic arriving and Captain Jack heading back to Torchwood whilst unwittingly revealing that he is The Face of Boe! The Christmas Special and fourth season are thus nicely set up and we're counting down the days until The Doctor returns...
