In the second instalment of Cult Spy's new Classic Moments, we look at the moment when Michael Dawson shocked hordes of avid Lost fans by murdering two fellow crash survivors down in the hatch.
The Context: Michael has returned to the camp after being missing for some time, held by The Others. He had initially left in a bid to find his son Walt, who was taken by the enemy. Down in the hatch, 'Henry Gale' - a man who claims to have recently parachuted into the island - is held captive. Many believe him to be one of The Others.
Michael confirms this and Ana Lucia, after her own shooting issues have reared their head via flashbacks, gives him the gun in order to kill off 'Henry', also known as Benjamin Linus...
The Moment: After passing the gun to Michael, Ana Lucia reclines back on the couch. "I'm sorry," says Michael, before unleashing a bullet into her out of nowhere. The look of shock and lack of comprehension on her face is fleeting, but memorable. Libby suddenly walks in, and a startled Michael shoots her too - twice. She falls to the floor, soon to be dead (along with Ana Lucia). Michael then frees Benjamin/Henry and shoots himself in the shoulder, to make himself look a victim too...
The Aftermath: Viewers were shocked by Michael's actions for various reasons. Firstly, the character had been clearly depicted as a caring, loving father throughout the course of the first season - an honest individual who we'd like to relate to. Furthermore, both Ana Lucia and Libby were regular cast members who had their own ongoing narrative strands, such as the latter's blossoming romance with Hurley. To have these so suddenly cut short was a huge jolt to the system.
We do learn that it was seemingly Michael's love for Walt that compelled him to commit the savage murders, for he returns to The Others and is reunited with his son Walt. They sail off into the distance, with Michael not seen during the third season. However, before he left he did confess to the crimes. He will soon be seen again in the fourth season.
