S03E02: 'Fire/Water'

This disappointing episode fails to deliver on the promising premise established by last week's season premiere. Could the show have jumped the proverbial shark? Given the far-fetched nature of some of the plot twists, it would be no surprise to see Lincoln Burrows fly over the prison walls of Sona while riding a shark in a bid to rescue his brother.

Whereas Prison Break was previously masterful in generating and sustaining tension throughout all of its concurrent narrative strands, it now all feels a bit tedious. The Sucre-Maricruz plot is a prime example and feels like we're running round in circles and dragging out time. The laboured plan Schofield used to blow up the water pipes wasn't remotely interesting either, while the speed at which Whistler was suddenly granted his freedom within the prison was overly contrived – even for Prison Break!

The endless shots of Schofield either brooding, thinking deeply or sulking have also had their day. In addition, the writers feel the need to constantly remind us that Lechero is a bad, bad man by having him commit act after act of inconsequential nastiness. Furthermore, T-Bag seems strangely peripheral so far this series, but hopefully he has something devilish up his sleeve.

Still, at least good old Brad Bellick is a joy to watch in his bid to alleviate his suffering and scratch his own belly.
