A meteorite is heading for earth with catastrophic consequences, but Sarah Jane reassures her young friends that her computer Mr Smith will ensure that it's deflected in time. Out of the blue, Sarah Jane entrusts Maria with a mysterious alien puzzle box that she hasn't been able to open. Maria plays around with it and makes some progress, and falls asleep with it. Unknown to her, a faceless figure in a black cloak is roaming the street outside in the darkness.
Maria wakes up to discover that the world has changed. She is stunned to hear that no one has ever heard of Sarah Jane Smith and that her house is now owned by a woman known as Andrea Yates. Luke is also nowhere to be seen. She calls Clyde, but he now barely knows her and thinks she's trying to chat him up.
At her local library, Maria finds a newspaper from 1964 stating that a Sarah Jane Smith drowned after falling off a pier after playing with her friend Andrea Yates, who witnessed her tragic demise. Maria's dad Alan is perturbed after his daughter says he can hear Sarah Jane's voice, so Maria then claims she was making it all up.
Maria confronts Andrea, but she rushes to her loft and picks up her own puzzle box. The cloaked figure then appears and it is agreed that Maria will have to disappear. A small alien called the Graske is then dispatched to capture Maria, which he does so successfully. In the meantime, Alan has picked up his daughter's puzzle box, meaning that he was impervious to the change in history caused by Maria's vanishing. He is shocked when his ex-wife turns up and has no recollection of the daughter they had together.
Maria is thrown back in time after she manages to escape from the clutches of the Graske. She is shocked to find herself near the fateful pier location with a young Andrea and Sarah Jane back in 1964.
