Classic Moments: Dana Scully's Abduction

In The X-Files' second season, Dana Scully's dramatic abduction in an episode titled 'Ascension' shocked fans across the globe. Relive the classic moment from 1994...

The Context

Dana Scully has been kidnapped by a deranged former FBI Agent called Duane Barry, who believes he has been repeatedly abducted and experimented on by extra-terrestrials. He is determined to offer a substitute abductee in his place and kidnaps Scully, thanks to a tip-off by the duplicitous Alex Krycek, and bundles her into the boot of his car. He drives to Skyland Mountain in Virginia, the location of his first abduction, and prepares for the little green men to arrive and collect Scully. However, it emerges that Barry has been suffering from delusions caused by a bullet piercing his frontal lobes when on duty in 1982. Is the imminent threat facing Scully even real?

The Moment

Scully's abduction is off-screen, but the scene loses none of its dramatic impact. Fox Mulder arrives on the mountain to discover Scully's necklace in the boot of Barry's vacated car. He looks to the dark skies and sees the bright lights of a UFO soaring away. After hearing laughter, he runs to a jubilant Barry who proclaims: "They took her!"

The Aftermath

Duane Barry dies of asphyxiation soon after and Fox Mulder embarks on a quest to find his missing partner. She shows up a few weeks later in a hospital, close to death. It emerges that those responsible for her abduction were not from another world, with the shady Cigarette Smoking Man admitting his involvement to Mulder.

Miraculously, Scully awakes from her coma and soon returns to active duty. However, she discovers she is unable to bear children and that a microchip has been implanted into her neck - with its later removal having drastic consequences for her health.

In reality, actress Gillian Anderson was pregnant at the time and Scully's absence functioned effectively as maternity leave.
