S04E01: 'The Beginning Of The End'

As Hurley waits on the beach for news from Charlie and Desmond there is a flashforward that shows him being pursued by police. When apprehended, he loudly lets it be known that he is one of the 'Oceanic Six', but he is quickly incarcerated and questioned by a former colleague of the deceased Ana-Lucia. Hurley denies having ever encountered her on the island and later experiences a hallucination that the room is being flooded. He is quickly dispatched to a mental institution.

When Hurley emerges from the ocean he sees Desmond walking towards him and the fellow beach dwellers - alone. He passes on the grim news of Charlie's death and also his message that the rescue boat does not belong to Penelope Widmore. After deeming it unwise to communicate via radio, the group heads towards Jack and the rest of his group on foot.

Naomi, who was stabbed by Locke and believed to be dead, disappears from Jack's group, with Kate later tracking her down. Before Naomi dies, she sends the boat a message stating that she wounded herself accidentally and that she wants her love to be passed on to her sister.

Back to Hurley's future, in which he now resides in a mental institution and receives a visit from a man posing as a representative of Oceanic Airlines. He offers Hurley better quality healthcare, but Hurley is suspicious and his demands for a business card are not met. The man then demands to know whether "they" are alive, which causes Hurley to become distressed. The man quickly flees the ward. Hurley later experiences a vision of Charlie telling him that "they" need him.

In the present, Hurley becomes lost on his trek through the jungle and stumbles across the remote building occupied by the mysterious Jacob. He peers inside and sees a figure on a chair, but a face appears on the other side of the window and Hurley flees - suffering apparitions along the way. Locke is soon on hand to reassure him.

In the future, Jack pays Hurley a visit in his institution. There is friction between the pair as Hurley encourages Jack to consider the possibility of returning to the island. He also reveals his regret for siding with Locke on the island.

Back on the island, in the present, the survivors all converge and Claire discovers the grim news about Charlie. Jack pounces on Locke, punching him and pulling the trigger on his gun while pointing the weapon at his head - but there are no bullets loaded. The survivors then split into two groups after Locke warns them that the impending rescue is now what it seems, imploring people to take refuge in the barracks deserted by The Others. Jack and Kate stay behind and witness a man, one of the supposed rescuers, parachute onto the island.
