Cult Spy: 'Primeval' Series Two Review

Behold our anomaly-free rundown of the most exciting and dramatic moments in Primeval's second series, dedicated to the ITV continuity announcer who repeatedly referred to a certain character as 'Cutler' for several weeks. Read on for more about the new additions to the cast, the marvellous monsters, the romantic intrigue and much more...

The New Characters

Jenny Lewis is an alternate version of Nick Cutter's beloved Claudia Brown, who has the same looks but a less friendly disposition. After Cutter emerged from an anomaly at the end of the first series, nobody had ever heard of Claudia - although this didn't stop him from referring to Jenny by that name. She is employed by Lester as a PR busybody in charge of concocting and implementing cover stories to conceal the truth.

Caroline entered the scene as a love interest for Connor. Overly keen to please him, she manoeuvred her way into his life and was revealed to be an employee of the villainous Oliver Leek. Unknown to Connor, she bashed up Abby's cute pet lizard Rex with a tennis racket and handed him over to Leek. Later, Leek dumper her with the captive members of the Arc and she pleaded with Connor to forgive her. A fight ensued with Abby and the character seemed to undergo a degree of redemption by saving Rex after he was struck by a bullet.

Oliver Leek was the season's 'Big Bad' - a self-proclaimed little man with a Napoleon Complex who sought to gain global domination by capturing beasts and controlling them with technology from the future supplied by Helen. For most of the episodes he was Lester's right hand man, although he came out of the shadows and sent his beasts to kill his dashing former boss. He met a suitable grizzly fate when his remote controlled creatures turned on him.

The Beasts

A dazzling array of super-sized creepy-crawlies emerged throughout the series, as expected. This time, they appeared to have a particular fondness for attacking those indulging in leisurely pursuits. Raptors kicked off the series by invading a bowling alley, followed by a sabre-toothed cat pursuing paintballers, underwater creatures from the future attacking a basketball player and sand-dwelling Silurian scorpions attacking both a girl walking her dog and beach dwellers. It came as a welcome relief when giant worms attacked office workers and a Colombian Mammoth opted to stomp all over motorists after galloping through an anomaly.

The Romance

Throughout the series there have been several romantic intrigues that have rumbled on, although not all were sealed with a kiss. The most prominent relationship occurred between nerdish Connor and the seemingly sweet Caroline. Their eyes first met in a video shop and they became amorous very quickly. She latched onto him like a parasite, despite his tendency to lose her mobile number and cancel dates due to sudden anomalies opening up. Alas, she was on Oliver Leek's payroll and in it for the money, not the love.

Casting a disapproving eye over the couple was Abby, who was in an ongoing 'will they, won't they' style relationship with Connor. The young man even went as far as to confess his love to the feisty blonde when she was dangling from a cliff and facing death, although he quickly side-stepped the issue later on to Abby's clear frustration.

Proving that love can indeed by skin deep, Nick Cutter did his best to worm his way into the affections of the somewhat prickly and aloof Jenny. A doppelganger for the far more homely Claudia Brown, who no longer exists in this reality, Jenny rebuffed Nick's attempts at flirtation and he quickly discovered that she was engaged. However, by the end of the series she was a single woman - although Nick wisely opted to try and save the world from a beastie bug invasion rather than grind her down into submission with his somewhat bland personality and monotonous dialogue. With similar traits to these, it was no wonder Stephen managed to lure Nick's estranged wife Helen into his bed. Well, it didn't quite work like that...

Helen - with her prominent cleavage resembling a clash of heads between Phil and Grant Mitchell - eventually resumed her affair with Stephen towards the end of the series in a bid to poison his mind against Nick and Lester. Despite Stephen's death and his knowledge of her duplicity, Helen appeared quite keen on resuming their fling at a later stage.

Abby Action

Hannah Spearritt probably thought she saw the last of synchronised moves when S Club disbanded. She was very wrong. For Abby really kicked some butt this series, echoing Sigourney Weaver's moves in Aliens by using a forklift truck to see off a large cat and later deploying her kickboxing skills to repel the overgrown tadpoles from the future. However, she saves her best moves for the very human foe called Caroline, but sadly Connor stepped in before she could deliver the knockout blow. Abby also revealed that she is a master at locating female elephant urine, although she may leave that off her CV.

The Season Finale Twist Ending

Last year's jaw-dropping ending featured Cutter returning from an anomaly to discover that Claudia no longer exists and Stephen had been romping with his wife. Well, another character has bitten the dust this year, as Stephen donated his flesh to the beasties by sacrificing his life to prevent the creatures from escaping into the outside world. But, like Claudia, there seems to be hope that he may return in some form as Helen later knelt over his grave and muttered that things could change. As she said this, several identical clones of a soldier previously killed started to surround her.
