S02E08: 'A Day In The Death'

On a rooftop, Owen tells a suicidal young woman about his very recent experiences as a dead man. She had previously had a car accident an hour after her wedding in which her new husband died. Owen goes back to when Captain Jack relieved him of his duties as a Torchwood team member until more was known about his condition, with Martha taking over and running a series of tests on him.

The team discover an energy spike coming from the home of the reclusive multimillionaire alien artefact collector Henry Parker. It is agreed to send Owen to break in, as the security system relies on heat sensors and Owen has no heat due to being technically dead.

Before embarking on his mission, Owen cleans out his flat of all the things he won't need and argues with Tosh. He then tries to drown himself in a lake but to no avail, with Jack helping to fish him out.

Owen successfully enters the house and meets the ailing Parker, who believes that a glowing, round alien object he calls 'The Pulse' is keeping him alive. Owen tells him that it is not, but is instead threatening to cause huge damage to the earth if the spikes continue. Parker hands it over and subsequently has a heart attack. Owen desperately tries to save him, but cannot give him mouth to mouth respiration as his lungs have no air.

It is later discovered that The Pulse is an alien response to messages beamed into outer space by the human race. Martha says goodbye to Torchwood as she opts to return to UNIT and Owen heads up to a rooftop when he sees the suicidal woman. Back in the present, Owen talks the woman out of jumping and the pair watch a dazzling light show that emits from The Pulse.
