'Prison Break' character for shock return

Prison Break character Dr Sara Tancredi will return for the fourth season of the show - despite her apparent beheading last year.

Executive producer Matt Olmstead confirmed the news to TV Guide and stated that the head found in a box belonged to someone other than Tancredi, who will again be played by actress Sarah Wayne Callies.

"As soon as we wrote it and shot it, we realised that there was actually a way she could still be alive," said Olmstead. "Lincoln [Burrows] glanced at the head in the box for a split second. That could've been anyone. He wasn't about to pull it up from the hair and inspect it closely... we never actually saw the character get killed."

Olmstead also revealed that online speculation played a part in the resurrection of Tancredi: "We saw on the message boards that a lot of fans were wondering if she really was dead. And then that led to conversations of, "Well, what if she isn't?"

The initial decision to kill off Tancredi in the third season caused a rift between Callies and Prison Break's producers, which prompted the actress to refuse to return for any filming last year. However, Olmstead said: "She's a very smart lady, and we're all adults here. It was never personal. It was a business and creative decision, and we're absolutely moving on."
