S04E02: 'The Fires Of Pompeii'

The Doctor and Donna land in Pompeii 79AD - the day before the famous volcano eruption that killed the residents. Donna wants to warn them, but the Time Lord tells her that they can't meddle with history. The Tardis is sold by an unscrupulous market trader to affluent local man Caecillius as a piece of modern art. The sinister and psychic Sisterhood cult serves a lady who has turned to stone and believe that the arrival of the time travellers will cause chaos and destruction.

Caecillius' daughter Evelina uses her psychic abilities to see a fiery rock monster lurking underground and one of her arms has turned to stone due to the particles of rock that she has inhaled through the air vents. A man called Lucius, who also has a stone limb, arrives with some complex architectural plans for a top secret project. He is working with the rock monsters and one of them emerges from below the ground, only to be repelled by simple water.

Donna warns Evelina about the eruption, which prompts the Sisterhood to take her captive. The Doctor finds his companion in the Sisterhood's lair just before she was due to be sacrificed. He confronts their stony boss, who reveals that she is a Pyrovile and is turning into a rock monster. The Doctor manages to fend her off with a water pistol and he flees inside the volcano alongside Donna.

In the heart of Vesuvius they witness more monsters patrolling the area and take refuge in an escape pod, after Lucius tells them that the planet will be converted into a fiery environment for the alien visitors. The Doctor is forced into triggering the eruption and wiping out 20,000 Pompeii residents - or else the whole planet is at grave risk. The pair use the escape pod to flee from the volcano as it erupts. After Donna pleads with him, The Doctor caves in and rescues Caecillius and his family. They look on at the carnage from a distant mountain-top.
