S04E03: 'Planet of the Ood'

The Ood are being used as servants by the human race and farmed on an alien planet during the second great and bountiful human empire in the year 4126. However, one of the servile aliens develops ‘red-eye' and turns against his master, killing him, before escaping from the complex.

The Doctor and Donna arrive on the planet after the Tardis coordinates were set to random. In the snow, they find the rogue Ood, who has sustained gunshot wounds during his escape. He soon passes away, although a brief spell of red-eyed aggression alerts The Doctor to the fact that something is wrong.

The human complex is full of potential buyers of Ood ’livestock’. The time travellers infiltrate their party and are appalled at the exploitative treatment of the Ood, prompting The Doctor to proclaim that he ‘owes them one’ for not being able to save members of their species during their previous encounter.

More cases of aggressive ‘red-eye’ Ood occur and the corporation’s boss Mr Halpen, preoccupied with his hair loss, is happy to slaughter all 2,000 of them to halt the spread of the disease.

In the Ood Sphere, The Doctor and Donna find crates of unprocessed Ood, with a natural secondary brain in their hands instead of the translators they are due to be fitted with. They are singing a telepathic ’Song of Captivity’ which The Doctor enables his tearful companion to hear.

Halpen orders his soldiers to gas the Ood to death, although he shows loyalty to his own personal slave by allowing him to make a bid for freedom. Fighting breaks out between the troops and the Ood, as Halpen enters a building containing a massive Ood brain - which the creatures have had their telepathic link severed from.

The Doctor arrives in time to prevent the detonation and witness Halpen transform into an Ood. It transpires that his servant has been feeding him a substance other than hair-restoring liquid, causing the sudden change. The Doctor removes the barrier around the brain and the Ood are telepathically connected again and become docile.
