The newest Red Dwarf was genuinely disappointing. I was not a fan of the show, at the begining, but grew to like it, over the years. I was genuinely looking forward to the new one, and was under-whelmed, at its performance. I thought these guys can do better than this. I was expecting laughs to come, somewhere out of the slow pace, that I could breath a sigh of relief. But it never came... I will admit, that when Lister sat down at that type writer, I really wanted him to bring them back to the life, they once where, but now we have to wait, to see if something can be salvaged from, what was, a major let down.

I really enjoyed the latest episodes, but more than a few people have suggested that something was missing. One of the things I feel added so much in the past was the audience participation, from what the guys have said since filming it seems that the whole recording process was quite different to previous series. Perhaps going back to the shows roots might yield a more traditional experience? Stick with to a winning formula I say!

Quite frankly I'd love to see at least one more series of the show, or maybe some more specials to make up a mini-series - if only to wrap up the storyline from Series 8 and at least put some sort of closure on it all. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if this didn't happen though - with all the negativity coming from all the supposed fans I'm half expecting it to jinx the possibility of more Red Dwarf. Actually, I'm utterly disgusted at how many miserable sods there are out there... So many people bitching about "how crap" Back To Earth was and articles like this droning on in such a negative light about the show's supposed downturn. Balls to all you Negative Nancy's I say! I thought Back To Earth was good and have my fingers crossed for more Red Dwarf in the future.

I think they should Bring Back Red Dwarf tv series cos its funny and it would great for sky digital and freeview channels to show it every night and it is also funny too.My Favourite character is hologram Arnold Rimmer cos he is always funny and says silly things to his crewmates.

I think its got another series in it. Maybe a new 'gags' man to join the writting team but i think the potential and the fanbase is there for another series. Come on bring it back !!!

Do I want more Red Dwarf? YES! BTE got me rewarching all of the series again. Danny John-Jules was brilliant as the Cat and all of the characters made you fall in love with them all over again too. It's great to have something with a real story to watch again. More please!

holy chuff!!! im now being targeted by the welsh!!! ill be up to my ears in lardy cakes and too many consonants if im not careful wont i boyo! look i say these things as a massive fan of red dwarf, i grew up with the series, i have watched the dvds more times than i care to remember, i understand the fan boys need to splatter there matter over there chosen sci fi/cult god but the specials were sub par and luke warm at best, the jokes were half baked, the chemistry between characters was stale and the plot...well the plot was so wafer thin and of no consequence that it would be deemed even too thin and inconsequential by a eec regulatory commitee set up to govern the standards of wafers, thinness and consequential to be seen as acceptable for public consumption. I totally understand the need for the franchise to be "rebooted" but the specials didnt light the touch paper look at dr who as a shining example of a series that came back from televisional hell and has found renewed vigor without sacrificing the concerns of die hard fans and actually gain new fans in the process (* i wonder what Russell T Davies is doing post DT who), red dwarf needs the same level of attention devoted to it, for the franchaises sake as well as the fans. speaking as man that is used to disappointment (im a star wars fan too you know) the creators have to think long and hard before resurrecting something so precious and all the will in the world cannot make something funny for instance, was there a single joke in the specials that was actually laugh out loud funny or on par with some of "space core directives gags" of old, whilst it is true the programme did have a very strong viewership are we fans really that suprised?, the pre show hysteria was created by a absolutely brilliant marketing campaign which helped bring the anticipation to fever pitch, but ultimately ended up being more of a let down than a pg13 sex comedy there was more hype surrounding these "specials" than the micheal jackson comeback gig but like jackson, red dwarf hasnt aged all that well!! and it will need more than a little cosmetic touch up to be great again. ps for the erstwhile james from swansea "Hitchhikers Guide" does not suck on the testes of primates although i have it on good authority that you indeed do. This is now deemed by myself a black card situation, end of conversation........you never learn do you! * the above comment was made for ironic purposes only and did not intend in anyway RTD should become a writer with the red dwarf franchaise!

This is to James-Swansea How can you possibly say that if you didnt like it you cannot call yourself a fan?!?!? I have been a massive fan since the first series but i hated Back to Earth! I didnt find it funny at all and when I watch Red Dwarf I like to be amused. So just because you liked it everyone else who didnt is wrong? That is very arrogant of you!! Also calling people small minded? Who do you think you are exactly? You follow it all up by insulting someone coz they liked Hitchhikers!! You are the one who is small minded. If you loved it then thats cool with me however I didnt like it, so be it. In conclusion I would however like them to do a new series providing Rob Grant comes back but that is very much doubtful
greg from london on April 18th, 2009
i know i've already left a comment before but as i'm watching back to earth again on sky plus i have to be honest, it's totally lame. doug mate, you've lost it, red dwarf has not been decent since series 6 when rob was still around. if you want to put out further crap scripts for red dwarf then by all means continue to do so. however, if you want it to end on a high note then either get rob back involved or just leave it the way it is before you screw it up further. you don't have a clue mate, you're past your time

i am a Dwarfer through and through and have been glued from the very beginning (having all of s 1-8 on good 'ol' video and now dvd) a bit disconcertingly the first specials episode 'Back to earth' got off to (and i will be honest here) a slow and shaky start, but by the last episode you could definitely feel the old magic pushing its way to the forefront again, yes, it may have gone slightly (and i do mean slightly) downhill since s7 and R Grant left the duo, but it would be sacrilige (even after a 10 year gap) not to ressurect and show us how rimmer saved the day after he came back from the mirror universe (end of s8) i hope Dave do/will commision another show at least, because overall the whole show (whatever universe/time-line we are in) is timeless
NIreland David Simpson on April 17th, 2009
With a laugh track and a better script "more gags" then a big YES
Richard Bignell, Chatham on April 17th, 2009
I greatly enjoyed the new Red Dwarf, but I would have changed two things. Firstly, it should have been run as one complete special rather than breaking it up into three shorter episodes. Secondly, the complete story should have been screened to an audience and their laughter added to the final mix (as per the latter RD seasons). This isn't canned laughter, but the genuine reactions of the audience watching it. It felt very wrong without the background audience reaction. I'd be very happy to see the boys back though.

I wasn't disappointed whatsoever with the Red Dwarf return. I have watched since series one, but tuned out a couple of episodes into series seven when everything seemed to go downhill. I felt that the comeback was a complete return to the glory days, I'd love to see it comeback for another series, espeically if it followed in the same vein. The first episode had me a bit concerned, but I suppose they had to set the scene because a ten year gap is a long time, but they went straight into episode two with hilarity. I think it's just one of those things, you are never going to be able to satisfy everyone and some people will never be satisfied. PS - does anyone else think this article had more fluff than actual content??
Alex - Essex on April 17th, 2009
I watched about 2 of the specials and I think that the show can't come back as I don't think It works anymore like It did before , shows do have a shelve life and I think the show's is up.
James-Swansea on April 17th, 2009
I dont care if some people didnt like it, they possib ly cannot call themselfs fans of the show, i thought the new episodes were fresh and enjoyed each minute of it so Brent? from Derby? you have no clue, a cult following means you would watch every single episode regardless of how it's written and above all it reunited us with the characters.obviously small minded people such as your self wouldnt understand that... also hitchhikers sucked monkey balls.
charley, southampton on April 17th, 2009
i thought back to earth was very poor compared to series 1-6. It was much more like 7-8 which was not great by any means but had some funny bits. The show lost all its humour ever since Rob Grant left (after series 6) and then doug naylor just ruined everything with his dramtic style and unfunny scripts. Back to Earth was very poor if you are a huge Red Dwarf fan.

Piers Jessemey, Southend-on-sea on April 16th, 2009
I think that your judgement was actually quite harsh, while i did notice the lack of a laugh track admitedly i think that after the first episode it picked itself up, you cant judge a show that in effect is just starting (again). Sometimes things take time to get rolling, and if you judge these episodes by the memories of all the best bits over the past 8 seasons then of course it fall short, your expectations where too high. i definately would like to see more red dwarf in the future. I mean come on, just because star wars episode 1-2-3 were awful doesnt stop people enjoying the originals
Eaglestriker on April 16th, 2009
I agree. I loved Red Dwarf (especially Series 2-6), but I'd only want it to come back if it had some fresh writers under its belt. Doug Naylor, who definately has his moments, has just gotten to know his own characters too well, and forgotten how to write the laugh-out-loud gags of old.
Joanna, England on April 16th, 2009
No judging by this travesty. Sorry Doug, but this was all special FX, emotions and a tribute to a film I only saw once and hated. I don't want to watch Blade Runner, I want to watch Red Dwarf - Red Dwarf when it was a SITCOM not a comedy-drama! Sorry, but despite a funny second part, this really sucked and anyone who says it didn't is just desperate to convince themselves the flogged horse isn't dead.
Baz @ London on April 16th, 2009
Well, as a sit-com, this was better than series VII and VIII, though it would have been improved vastly with a laughter track to carry it on. Repackaging Dwarf as a sci-fi drama with comedy would be a big step, but maybe the way to go.
Leen, Berlin on April 16th, 2009
I absolutely want more Dwarf. The special was a commercial success, so... come one already.
Ben, Hull on April 16th, 2009
It's amusing how all these website reviews have slated the product, while the viewers... yanno, the ones these programmes are made for... have [as a trilogy] praised the new specials. Don't forget that's what these episodes were, specials. If Dave do/will commission a 9th, sorry 11th series, they would more than likely resume the normal format with an audience etc. Specials are always made with a more filmic effect to give them what they're called, a special feel. I think personally that all these websites who are paid to make controversial reviews should just be happy for its success, and see how proud Dave are for getting such amazing ratings. And with high ratings, come a high audience, meaning there are plenty of people [2.66 million specifically] who would love a comeback for Dwarf. Rant over!

"BRING IT BACK!" I came home late Monday night after a weekend away. Decided to watch the first episode but ended up sitting up till 2am watching all three,! then watched them all again the following night as I copied them from SKy+ to DVD so my brother could watch them. "BRILLIANT" and a pleasant change from all the American dross on TV these days.
Jas, Reading on April 16th, 2009
I definitey want more Dwarf, and would be perfectly happy if it resembled the new specials. My mates and I enjoyed them and want more! Admittedly, there were ghastly gags and a couple of wobbles, but we got a lot of laughs and a great emotional payoff too. Not the best Dwarf by a long shot, but compares favourably to parts of series four, seven, and eight. Plus, one of my fellow fans who walked in disgust during series eight also enjoyed it and is back to being a fan again. Hurrah!

sod red dwarf it had its chance and came up with nothing except some lame blade runner pastiche which i found more cringeworthy than licking a lemon whilst watching re runs of ricky gervais, the best series of red dwarf i believe was the first, as it all seemed tighter and the jokes relied less on appeasing sci fi geekboys (which i admit i am one of) and more about original set ups and establishing believeable characters. What about the other sci fi franchise that could do with a health injection im tlking about "hitchhikers" surely this is a better property to be explored after disney put any sequel on hiatus, well as long as that bloke from the office isnt Arthur Dent anyway

I think that red dawrf should come back because the specials were great, it worked well and it was as good as the serie's. I thought back to earth was well wrote and the acting was as good as ever. I say bring back RED DAWRF Please please please
Derek O'Brien, Manchester UK on April 16th, 2009
Back to Earth would have been okay as one of those throwaway bits shows do for Comic Relief or Children in Need, but was otherwise disappounting. the cast looked bloated and tired, there was so little for the Cat and Kryten to do they might just as well have been CGI, the plotline of fictional characters entering the real world was already done in the League of Gentlemen Apocalypse movie, and Naylor was so busy being clever with his Blade Runner references that he forgot to be funny. Make Red arf as a radio show, so the money and effort can go into the writing and the cast can look young and fresh in our mind's eyes...

How about bringing back Worzel Gummidge! He could wreak havoc in the 21st century.
Kenji on April 16th, 2009
I don't see how people thought the return was horrible. No it isn't as funny as its prime but it still provided quality comedy. The return was more reminiscent of the first and second series. A few people hit on it, but this is serving as a second pilot. I say let the boys from the Dwarf out for a bit of air and get a real series going.
Mark (NZ) on April 16th, 2009
Before I mention the new specials I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of Red Dwarf (I have all the series ... bought first on video then again on DVD). Of the 8 full seasons (to date) I would rate them as follows: * Series one was pure cheese - but brilliant all the same. * Series' two to five were Red Dwarf at its best. * Series six was funny but seemed a little tired. * Series seven was, in my opinion, abysmal. It wasn't just unfunny it was boring. This is the only season that I can't bring myself to re-watch on a regular basis. * Series eight was an improvement over seven ... but nowhere near 1-6. For me, the "Back to Earth" specials rank between series 7 and series 8 for quality. The premise was OK although hardly inspired (they’ve done that basic storyline twice before) – it had a few chuckles … but it was largely flat. Long gaps between laughs (and I use that term loosely) ... over-long buildups with little payoff. It had a very high cheese factor ... but not in a particularly funny way. There were no honest belly-laughs to be had anywhere in these specials. It was more an amusing "dramedy" as opposed to the laugh-out-loud comedy it should have been. They tried to be clever (Bladerunner references were pretty well done) – but it just wasn’t funny enough. I guess that's part of the balancing act. The fact that they had such a tiny budget (most of the SFX were done basically for free), and only had 14 days to shoot the entire thing, goes some way to explaining why it was so flat and seemed so forced all the way through. However after waiting 10 years I was hoping for something a little more inspired ... re-invigorated after the break so to speak. Don't get me wrong ... I don't think it was *terrible* (it was certainly better than most of the cr*p on TV these days) it just wasn't classic Red Dwarf. I really hope they get the go-ahead to make series 10. But if they do they really need to go back to the roots of Red Dwarf and what made it funny. They also *really* need to film in front of a studio audience again … the live laughter adds something (and also gives them feedback as to what jokes work and what ones really really really don't) And they need to get Rob and Doug to settle their differences and work together again. It just hasn’t been the same since they went their separate ways. Just my 2c worth.

Now bring back Rentaghost!
Lucia, Birmingham on April 15th, 2009
Bring it back!!! Yes the Back to Earth was not as good as the old days, but I think that was a combination of them trying to do something which could potentially be a one off last fling and also not having the studio audience laughter did lose something overall, but its a well loved series and with a good writer then it would do well again. The last series didn't finish conclusivelyand there is plenty of scope for them to do more.
John,. Walthamstow on April 15th, 2009
Spot on review: RD should return if they can get somebody hungry to write it. Naylor seems to have forgotten - if he ever knew - the first rules of scriptwriting: CONFLICT = DRAMA, and OBSTACLES = COMEDY. The only hint of a problem for any of the guys was when the 'Russian' bird turned up about twenty minutes in. It took thirty seconds at the start for anything resembling a joke to happen. And "sending an egg whisk on holiday" wasn't strong enough to string a whole gag run on. But he did. Like Ben Elton at his sloppiest.
James, London on April 15th, 2009
I say bring it back. It was a slightly different Dwarf but a lot of the old school vibe was there. A lot of the jokes were in the same old style and the episode was brilliant in my opinion, especially when viewed as a whole. And a lot of fans have been very positive about the new shows.
Adam on April 15th, 2009
Red Dwarf's return was fantastic, the story was great and the ratings were extraordinary. The show definately needs to return and I look forward to seeing it. However, you have fails to understand why the show was filmed without an audience and why Naylor wrote it himself. The key word: spoilers! He was trying to keep everything quiet and he did a great job with it. The opening sequence could have done with a bit more work, as it reflected the series 1 dialogue between Rimmer and Lister. However, overall, it was a great story. You also failed to remember that Naylor did bring in other writers for series 7 and 8, and assuming the series returns, I would imagine he would do the same again! Bring back Red Dwarf!
